The History and Development of the Seaside Town of Paignton in Devon, England

Paignton is a popular seaside holiday destination in Devon, renowned for its long sandy beaches, Victorian pier, and steam railway.

But it has an intriguing history spanning over 1,000 years.
Origins and Early History
Paignton has ancient Celtic roots and is first mentioned in the 11th century Domesday Book. It grew slowly as a small fishing village and market town. Historic attractions include medieval houses and towers linked to bishops and early Bible translations.
Victorian Boom and Railway
In the 1800s Paignton expanded rapidly thanks to a new harbor and railway line bringing tourists from London. Fine Victorian architecture remains from this period. The famous huge “Paignton Pudding” feasts also originate from the 13th century
